What's on my needles September 2026
Although technically September is still summer, I always think of it as fall. I love every season, but I think fall is my favorite. The days are still warm but the mornings have that perfect chill to them, perfect for cuddling up on the front porch in a cozy hand-knit sweater with that first coffee of the day, but not so chilly you see your breath. I start sitting outside more with my knitting because in August it was just too darn hot. Not that I did as much knitting this August as I normally would....
We are officially downsizing and although its been a long time coming, its not an easy task. Much of my August was spent sorting through decades of accumulation and I'm not even talking about my stash 😁Giving away furniture, tools, clothes, cleaning the house to Stepford Wife level for listing and showings - its been a mad dash for sure. So now its September and I'm enjoying the small calm before the storm of moving.
Before the decision to downsize happened I had a whole bunch of projects on my knitting plate that I honestly didn't get to but as I review what's on my needles right now in September I actually surprised myself with where I'm at. For the Rats and Roses sweater, I had completed 2 sweaters but have yet to record the gauge, block them, record the gauge again, work out grading sizes and writing up the pattern - I think I just plopped that one on the procrastination pile because I can only handle so many big tasks at once.
Revisiting the Unicorn mittens pattern - one of the originals that I published, knit up 2 new samples in different colorways, even winning a close game of yarn chicken with the black and grey version. The pink version was also different as I decided to pair up fingering with baby suri alpaca from Polka Dot Creek Yarns. I was very happy with the result, fluffy and soft - It feels extra warm and its not even cold yet. Now they are set aside in the "to be photographed" pile.
I also managed to whip off several colourways of the Magnus Archives inspired Magnus Eyes mittens. I was introduced to the horror podcast by my daughter and I binge listened to it twice. When she caught up to me she happily made me a variety of insane eyes that I turned into long fingerless gloves. I enjoyed making them so much that I also designed some shorter versions with less eyes (but no less creepy) so I have a whole bunch more EYE knitting in my queue. I can hardly wait to get this one out there into the world.
For mindless movie watching time I have the Sea Glass sweater on my needles - pattern by Wool and Pine. Its a great pattern for using up smallere bits in your stash. I was a good way through and I had to pretty much start over as I picked the wrong size and it was turning our more snug than I would like but I do like how its turning out now...
So as I'm waiting for the leaves to change to take photos, (and have more EYE gloves done) I'm also working on designing the next Zodiac mittens - Cancer the crab, and working on a Unicorn hat design to match the Unicorn mittens, and knitting up samples of the free pattern I will be releasing soon called Squares. Ironically it was the Sea Glass sweater that reminded me that I had made the Squares mitten pattern years ago with the same idea in mind - a fun pattern that can easily use up all those little bits in your stash or that weird sock yarn that you just don't know what to do with.
So its September and I thought I hadn't really done much... but it turns out I've actually got quite a lot going on after all. I think I'm maybe just beating myself up a bit for not have that Dancing Rats pattern finished. A sweater pattern has so much more to it than mittens...
