My superpower is knitting
My Superpower is Knitting!

Many things could be considered a super-power. The abilities of parkour athletes to scale walls, or jump from building to building, defying gravity like Spiderman leave me gob-smacked. Or there are some very smart people whom I've met who can "see" math, solving complex equations in their head in seconds without the use of a calculator or even pen and paper like some kind of Dr Strange. My superpower is knitting. I know that doesn't sound like much but hear me out.

By waving 2 sticks (my magic wands) I can turn mere string into any garment imaginable. It may take days or even months but the transformation is inevitable, like watching sped up documentary footage of a seed sprouting from the ground to wriggle its way to a full fledged flower. The stitches multiply and join and become something beautiful.

I can manipulate time. By picking up my most complicated project and knitting 10-20 stitches, water will boil, the doctor will be ready to see you now, or the train will reach the station.

By knitting I also have amazing summoning powers. I need only focus on a cable twist or lacy yarn-over sequence and the doorbell will chime, the phone will ring, and even animals or people will show up requiring immediate attention.

When I'm not warping time and summoning beasts, I find I can travel through time and space. Touching a particular skein of yarn can transport me to that time and place where I obtained it. That lovely grey cashmere takes me to that adorable little shop in San Francisco 5 years ago, or that scratchy ball of Lopi will put me back in the chaotic room at that community centre where a bunch of us held a fun and slightly manic yarn swap. Seeing someone wearing one of my manifested and gifted garments will do the same, my own personal time portal linking yarn, effort, people and place.

My newest knitting superpower that has revealed itself is "seeing" the construction. Show me an intricate cable knit and I will immediately "see" the patterns, the gauge, the yarn weight, the increases or decreases, and the row repeats. Even the yarn itself will speak to me, telling me its origin from sheep or goat, plant or plastic, whispering how it wants to be treated, whether with absolute distain tossed into a laundry basket or as coveted royalty to be handled tenderly with utmost care.

I may not be faster than a speeding bullet or able to leap tall buildings with a single bound but the superpowers I do have suit me just fine... even if I could use a little less summoning.
